A calendar stone of the Aztec, not a sundial or a sacrificial vessel

3.6 m (12 ft) in diameter and 98 cm (39 in) thick

made between 1502-1521, rediscovered in 1790

~5 rings
-
the face and the X: 5 successive creations of the world

the X outline and the 4 dots: 4 earthquakes; where the Aztec live
-
1st ring: 260 days yielded by 20 named days * 13 numbers
-
2nd rings: symbols of turquoise, feathers, blood drops, etc.

3rd ring: 2 dragons that probably symbolize the blue sky vault

1790: rediscovered during construction (was buried before)

1791: placed on the side of the Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral

1885: was transferred to the Monolith Gallery of the Archaeological Museum on Moneda Street

1964: was transferred to the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City
